Greg Watts returns to Carman as Business Development Manager

Carman Contracting is pleased to welcome back a familiar face as Greg Watts returns as Business Development Manager.

Greg originally joined Carman in 2021 and worked across several areas of our business, including fabrication and refurbishment, before moving across to manage projects for the Fire Safety Division.

After leaving Carman last year, Greg took on the role of Contracts Manager, managing a team of around 30 subcontract decorators working across multiple projects throughout the South of England. “After 11 months in this role, I think that the experience developed my ability to stay calm under pressure, solve problems and get things done,” said Greg. “You could now probably throw most things at me in the construction industry!”

Despite the challenge of this new role, Greg stayed in touch with Carman, and it wasn’t long before he realised what he was missing. “After about three months, I started to realise how much I missed the culture at Carman, the team support, the humour and just the people in general,” he explained. “Leaving the company was the right decision at the time because it gave me the opportunity to challenge myself elsewhere and gain a lot of valuable experience. But it also made me realise how much I enjoyed being part of the Carman team.”

As our BDM, Greg will concentrate on building relationships with new and existing clients to develop new business opportunities and work closely with the wider team to ensure we deliver what's realistic and achievable. "Ultimately, I see the role as being about building trust, strengthening Carman's relationships and bringing in the right opportunities." he explained.

Having worked across our business, Greg understands the practical side of projects, from the first conversation through to completion. But he knows that his new role will be challenging as competition is high and companies already have established relationships. He sees good business development as not just having a conversation, getting a price out, and moving on to the next project, but as building real relationships, getting to know people, and sometimes that involves talking about everything other than work.

“I think there are growth opportunities across all areas of Carman,” he added. “The best ones will come from strengthening our existing client base, developing new relationships and making sure we’re putting Carman in front of the right people at the right time.”

Commenting on his return to Carman, Greg admitted that "In some ways it does feel like I've never been away. The people, the culture, the banter and the general way of working all came back very naturally. It feels familiar, but at the same time, like I’ve got something new to bring to the table. I'm really looking forward to getting going.”
