MEET THE TEAM
OUR FOUNDERS
Carman Contracting was founded in 2020 by Rory Carman and James Selwood, who first met when working together on a major government project. Although they came from different professional backgrounds, Rory, with his technical, hands-on experience and James, with strong credentials in the commercial management of projects, quickly found common ground.
Through their dedication and hard work, Carman Contracting has grown rapidly into a successful business delivering high-quality construction, renewable energy, and fire protection services across the South West, South East and London.
RORY CARMAN
Director
Rory has a hands-on background in electrical contracting, combining technical training with practical site experience from the very start of his career. He has expertly managed large-scale M&E and electrical projects for both commercial and public sector clients, where he has gained a reputation for operational problem-solving and attention to detail.
As Director, Rory leads the technical and delivery aspects of Carman Contracting, overseeing complex M&E works, LV upgrades, solar PV installations, and EV charging installations. With various major civic projects now underway, Rory remains focused on growing the business sustainably, and, in his own words, “keeping the company growing and keeping enjoying what I do!”
JAMES SELWOOD
Director
James graduated from Napier University with an honours degree in Quantity Surveying. His early roles at Balfour Kilpatrick, Ridge and PRISM, working on major government and commercial contracts, laid the foundation for launching Selwood Surveying Ltd in 2007, where he partnered with Tier 1 contractors on high-profile projects.
As Commercial Director, James holds financial responsibility, ensuring profitability through effective tendering and final account negotiations, while also providing leadership and guidance to optimise team performance.
James is focused on driving sustained business growth by strengthening customer relationships and expanding our client base, as well as developing our specialist divisions, including solar and fire, to secure larger turnkey projects.
“As a company owner, I know that success isn’t built on ideas alone; it’s the team that brings them to life. A strong, united team is the foundation upon which everything else stands.”
