Carman Contracting completes first school project for Kier Group and Wiltshire Council
Carman Contracting has successfully completed its first school improvement project for Kier Group on behalf of Wiltshire Council at Broad Town Primary School on the outskirts of Royal Wootton Bassett.
The project involved demolishing an old temporary classroom and a series of external improvements to extend the outdoor space. Working within a live school environment during normal school hours, our team carefully coordinated the safe removal of a temporary building and disconnected and removed the existing electrical, water, and gas infrastructure. The area was then made good, and a new tarmac was laid to create additional playground space for the school’s pupils.
The project also included extending the sensory garden areas to support outdoor learning activities at the school, which has official Forest School status. The Forest School approach encourages children to learn outdoors and develop important life skills such as teamwork, resilience and confidence.
In addition to the external works, Carman refurbished five original timber windows on the school building. The refurbishment involved removing rotten timber sections, splicing in new timber, replacing the putty and redecorating the windows, extending their lifespan by more than 15 years.
The project, including the demolition element, which was carried out with the support of a specialist demolition contractor, was completed over a three-week period during term time.
John Graham, Carman Contracting Operations Director, said “The children loved seeing the diggers and watching the demolition work take place. It was a really positive experience for them and a great opportunity to safely engage with the construction process while the project was happening around them.”
The completion of this project marks the start of Carman’s working relationship with Kier Group on Wiltshire Council school projects, and it has since led to a further contract at Lyneham Primary School.
