Adam Houghton joins Carman Contracting as Head of Fire Division
Carman Contracting has strengthened the company's fire protection expertise across its growing portfolio of projects with the appointment of Adam Houghton as Business Unit Manager - Head of Fire Division.
Adam originally trained and worked as a carpenter. After several years of working in construction, he ran his own business, specialising in residential extensions and renovations, before moving into project management with Elite Build on high-end residential and commercial contracts. From there, Adam began to specialise in fire safety, taking on the role of Assistant Operations Manager for Bryburn, a construction company focused on fire protection, fit out, defence, and development work.
Adam worked in conjunction with Carman Contracting on several projects before joining the company in October 2025 to lead our fire protection operations. As head of our Fire Division, Adam is responsible for managing contracts and teams on-site, preparing quotations, overseeing project delivery, and driving business development as the division continues to expand.
“Since I first started working in fire safety, I’ve always liked that it’s about the small changes that make a big difference to people’s lives,” said Adam. “In this role, I get to play my part in building a safer future. Carman has a great structure and an organised way of working, with a really supportive and friendly team that always has time for you.”
Adam recently completed his BM TRADA training and he’s currently managing the project for our long-standing client, Equans, at Barnstaple Magistrates Court. Here, his team is replacing non-compliant fire doors and carrying out essential fire stopping measures to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through walls, floors, and service penetrations.
“Adam’s practical background and specialist fire protection expertise make him an excellent fit to lead our fire division,” said Carman Director, James Selwood. “His technical knowledge and commitment to safety reflect exactly what we stand for as a business.”
Outside of work, Adam enjoys playing golf and watching rugby and football (he once played for Chichester). He and his partner spend their spare time exploring with their cockapoo, Missy, and are avid country music fans, travelling to concerts and events across the UK. Next year, they plan to visit the home of country music, Nashville, and stay on a working ranch.
